iiNews - monthly news from iiNet
letter from the editor

Recently a lot of my time has been spent on one major project - the content for the brand new website! Although I may have writer's cramp from too many hours typing, I got off lightly as the 'web guys' spent many long nights working on the look and feel of the new iiNet website. Congratulations to everyone and we hope you like our new face.

Even though our new brand has been unveiled, we can't let out a full sigh of relief just yet, as we are already gearing up for our next big project - the annual Open Day at the Perth headquarters.

Last year was my first Open Day, I can assure you that this year it will be even better with great new seminar topics and newly branded 'ii' merchandise giveaways.

So until next month... unless I see you at the Open Day first!

general news

brand relaunch
In addition to our new look and feel, we've been hard at work identifying our core brand values and what we need to do behind the scenes to make sure our customers really do "connect better".

Our brand values are the basis for everything we do in our quest to be an innovative communications company for quality products and top notch customer service.

We're determined to do things differently than the big corporate phone and Internet companies. To learn more about our brand and what we hope it will achieve, find out about our brand new day.

open day
This year our Open Day will be held from 12pm to 6pm on Friday November 26 in the Perth office. Everybody is welcome to come and see what goes on behind the scenes at our head office, meet some of our staff and take a guided tour.

Throughout the afternoon, seminars will be held on topics ranging from how to manage your email and protect against viruses and spam, to how DSLAMs are being deployed and integrated with our national network.

There is something for everyone. Register your interest online as spaces are limited and will fill quickly. For more information email us at openday@iinet.net.au, or call our Customer Service Centre anytime on 13 22 58. See you there!

customer service news
In line with the recent Contact Centre restructuring we have now appointed two new Customer Service Managers, Richard Scacheri and Jason Duff, who have been with us for four and five years respectively.

Richard and Jason's extensive knowledge of our products and procedures and exceptional levels of customer service enables them to bring a wealth of experience and skills to share with all our Contact Centre staff. We are very pleased to see our staff developing and growing along with the company.

In next month's customer service news we will be reporting on the new team structures and its impact on the Contact Centre.

anti-spam/anti-virus
You may have received our recent email about our upcoming premium anti-spam and anti-virus solutions we are providing our customers for free. This will be activated on November 15, from which time your iiNet email account will be protected by a built-in email virus filter and spam protection.

The award-winning Symantec Brightmail Anti-Spam solution has a 99.9999% accuracy rate, meaning that less than one in 1 million emails has the chance of being incorrectly identified as spam. The world-leading antivirus solution from Sophos is updated regularly to keep abreast of today's net nasties.

We've set the default to automatically delete email viruses from your iiNet email account.

For the antispam protection we have maintained your previous settings, but you can update your settings to tag or delete spam or turn this service off at any time using Toolbox.

FAQ
This month our frequently asked questions are all about the new brand.

Why did iiNet change its logo?
iiNet will soon become a full service home line telecommunications company plus an Internet Service Provider. Our previous branding tied us closely to the Internet. By creating an entirely new look and feel, we can clearly communicate our new broader product offerings to customers.

What changes will I notice with the new brand?
The website has been redesigned and structured to be more simple, concise and easier to navigate. Our invoices are also being redesigned with the new brand and to ensure key information is easily located.

What won't be changing with the new brand?
The re-branding will have no effect on any account settings such as POP and SMTP settings. Our sub-domains and domains will remain unchanged also.

If I pay by cheque, who should I make it payable to?
iiNet Limited.

DSLAM update
As you are no doubt aware by now, iiNet is very excited about the ongoing rollout of our own DSL network infrastructure, and to date we have over 9,000 customers migrated onto our own DSLAM's.

So what does a DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) mean for customers? Basically a DSLAM involves installing own our hardware into the existing Telstra exchanges, so we can provide DSL Broadband services directly to you, without needing to use the Telstra's DSL network.

The result will be faster, more reliable, and (over time) more cost efficient broadband service. Exchanges recently completed are:

WA Victoria Park, Bulwer, Doubleview, Subiaco, Fremantle, Mt Hawthorn, Hamersley, Maylands, Mullaloo, Nedlands, Bateman, Applecross, Morley, Kingsley and Midland
Vic North Melbourne
NSW Homebush
Tas Davey

The next couple of months will be very busy for the DSLAM team as we aim to considerably increase the number of exchanges migrated onto the iiNet DSLAM infrastructure in the Eastern states, while continuing with the steady deployment schedule in WA. To check when your exchange will be migrated please visit the DSLAM Update on our website.

We have also been doing some network enhancements, where you will experience better connectivity and download/upload results.

Happy surfing!
The DSLAM Team

tip of the month
If you are trying to access pages from the old iiNet website that you can no longer find, just visit archive.iinet.net.au or insert "archive" where "www" would usually be. For example: www.iinet.net.au/newsletters/index.html will now be http://archive.iinet.net.au/newsletters/index.html.

customer profile
Name: Michael Bain
Account type: Explorer dialup

How long have you been an iiNet customer?
Since 1998. (Michael was originally a Wantree customer, who became an iiNet customer when he decided to stay on after the Wantree acquisition.)

What is the focus of your life at the moment?
My family and my photography. My photography ensures I shoot anything and everything, recently I shot the photo of iiNet MD Michael Malone receiving the plaque from Telstra, for reaching the 50,000 DSL customer milestone which appeared in last month's iiNet newsletter!

What do you mainly use your iiNet Internet account for?
Sending emails, contacting clients and sending images to clients. I also find it handy to source the best price on products from around the world.

Where do you photos usually appear?
I don't actually see where all my pictures end up, they often appear in ads and in-house magazines. Sometimes I will be sitting in a doctor's surgery flicking through the magazines and I will come across one of my photos - it's quite a strange experience!

two minute review
Bungie's Halo 2 on Xbox...

It's time to get back into the Master Chief's helmet and take on the Covenant! With hype so immense and gamers counting down the days to release, this title sure had its work cut out.

Thankfully, the boffins at Bungie have delivered on virtually every promise - from the vast, rich visuals to the haunting soundtrack, Halo 2 is the closest yet to the complete adventure game, far outstripping other FPS console titles.

The gameplay is a smooth and inviting ride of intuitive control, simple to master and built on the control setup of the original Halo. You'll have no trouble getting comfortable with the new vehicles, weaponry and the infamous 'dual-wielding' firing system - this title's look and feel is the lazy-boy recliner of the gaming world.

Without revealing too much, Halo 2 will have you battling through a deserted metropolis, battling aliens in freefall and revisiting some...old stomping grounds. Too many times you'll find yourself exposed and in trouble just by stopping to admire the vast landscapes.

If you own an Xbox, this is a must-have. If not for the experience, at least for some understanding of what the rest of the world is going on about!
